UNT set an enrollment record for fall 2013 with 36,221 students, an increase of 385 compared to the fall 2012’s unofficial headcount at the fall census date (12th day of classes).

Daymond John, founder of the fashion brand FUBU and a cast member of ABC’s “Shark Tank,” will speak about entrepreneurship at UNT's Murphy Center for Entrepreneurship’s BDO USA, LLP Leadership Luncheon Nov. 8. UNT alumnus Norm Miller, chairman of Interstate Batteries, will receive the annual Murphy Award, given to an entrepreneur for a lifetime of achievement in business.

Four UNT College of Information students were selected as 2013 Spectrum Scholars by the American Library Association. UNT is one of only three Texas universities to have students selected as scholars, and has more scholars than the other Texas universities.

UNT will celebrate the life of Dr. Alfred F. Hurley, the 12th and longest serving president of UNT and the first chancellor of the formal UNT System, in an event at 3 p.m. Sept. 28 on the UNT campus.

The North Star of Texas Writing Project at UNT will present the critically acclaimed author Matt de la Peña — who is known for such young adult novels as “Ball Don’t Lie,” “Mexican WhiteBoy” and “We Were Here” — on Sept. 28at the 12th Annual Denton Area Texas Association for the Improvement of Reading conference.

A new UNT grant project called Project STArT  will provide on-the-job coaching and full scholarships to special education teachers who are seeking master’s degrees in special education with a concentration in autism intervention.

UNT's Distinguished Lecture Series will host Rainn Wilson, best known for playing “Dwight Schrute” on NBC’s “The Office” on Sept. 19. Wilson will discuss SoulPancake, a book and social project developed to encourage discussions on spirituality, creativity, arts and philosophy.

Dr. Tony Mendes, director of UNT's Murphy Center for Entrepreneurship, has been named president-elect of the U.S. Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship, the nation’s largest faculty organization for professors teaching and researching entrepreneurship. Mendes will begin serving a one-year term as president-elect when his presidency begins in January.

UNT Master of of Public Adminsitration student Tyler Brewer received the nationally competitive Edwin O. Stene Academic Scholarship from the International City/County Management Association to attend the group’s conference Sept. 22 - 25 in Boston.
