DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Youth from kindergarten to the 12th grade and their families can learn more about art at Saturdays in the UNT Galleries, sponsored by the University of North Texas chapter of the National Art Education Association.

The first event of the 2014-15 school year takes place from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 20 (Saturday) at the UNT Art Gallery, 1201 W. Mulberry St.

The program begins with an activity related to the exhibition in the gallery – Discoveries of the FotoFest Houston Meeting Place, which features photographs by emerging artists from around the world. These artists participated in the Meeting Place Portfolio Review at the 2012 Houston FotoFest Biennial.

After the activity, guest artist Jeff Amano, a Denton-based graphic artist/novelist, will talk about his work and engage families in a visual storytelling exercise. He is working on a TV series based on his graphic novel Red Warrior and writing and illustrating his first picture book, Sam-Sammy Samurai.

Volunteers from NAEA, who are studying to become art teachers, will help guests with the activities. They also come up with the curriculum and projects.

"We try to encourage the families to come together," said Shay Youngblood, family programs coordinator for UNT Galleries. "There'll be something for everybody to enjoy, including adults."

Saturdays in the UNT Galleries, now in its second year, takes place four times each academic year.

The other events this year will feature activities about theater, collage and photography, and are scheduled for:

  • Nov. 8
  • Feb. 7, 2015
  • April 11, 2015
