UNT Creative Writing's fall Visiting Writers Series begins Sept. 28

DENTON (UNT), Texas – Five renowned writers will give readings at the University of North Texas this fall as part of the UNT Creative Writing Program's Visiting Writers Series. The series brings nationally and internationally renowned writers to campus every semester to give book readings and signings and to hold question and answer sessions.

All events in the Visiting Writers Series are free. Parking will be available in UNT's Highland Street Garage.

Three faculty members will kick off this fall's Visiting Writers Series and will give readings and book signings of their work at 8 p.m. on September 28 (Wednesday) in Sage Hall, located at 1167 Union Circle. The faculty members scheduled to give readings include:

  • Jehanne Dubrow, associate professor of creative writing. Dubrow's sixth book, Dots & Dashes, won the Crab Orchard Series in Poetry Open Competition Award and will be published in 2017. Dubrow's work has been featured in Virginia Quarterly Review, The New England Review, Ploughshares and The New York Times Magazine.
  • Ian McGuire, associate professor of creative writing. McGuire grew up near Hull, England, and studied at the University of Manchester and the University of Virginia. He writes criticism and fiction, and his stories have been published in Chicago Review, The Paris Review and other publications. His recent novel The North Water was longlisted for the 2016 Man Booker Prize.
  • Jill Talbot, assistant professor of creative writing. Talbot is the author of The Way We Weren't: A Memoir and the editor of Metawritings: Toward a Theory of Nonfiction. Her work has appeared in journals such as Brevity, DIAGRAM, Ecotone, Fourth Genre, The Paris Review Daily, The Normal School and Slice Magazine, and has been listed as Notables in Best American Essays 2014, 2015 and 2016.

The two visiting writers scheduled to give readings include:

  • October 20 (Thursday) – Charles D'Ambrosio is the author of two collections of short stories, The Point and Other Stories and The Dead Fish Museum, and two essay collections, Orphans and Loitering. His work has been featured in The New Yorker, Tin House, Harper's and The Paris Review and he has been the recipient of a Whiting Writers' Award and a Lannan Award. He currently teaches fiction at the Iowa Writers' Workshop.
    • Q&A: 4 p.m. in Room 120 of Terrill Hall, 1611 W. Mulberry St.
    • Reading: 8 p.m. in Room 180 of the Business Leadership Building, 1307 W. Highland St.
  • November 15 (Tuesday) – Dagoberto Gilb is the author of several books, including The Flowers, Grito, The Magic of Blood and The Last Known Residence of Mickey Acuña. His work has been recognized by several awards, including the Guggenheim and National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, and has been featured in numerous magazines, including Harper's, The New Yorker and The Nation. At the University of Houston-Victoria, Gilb is the executive director and writer-in-residence of Centro Victoria, a center for Mexican-American literature and culture.
    • Reading: 8 p.m. in Room 333 of the University Union, 1155 Union Circle

Books from all of the authors will be sold at every evening reading. A book signing will follow each reading.
