DENTON (UNT), Texas -- The University of North Texas College of Music's Spectrum: New Works from North Texas performance at 8 p.m. Oct. 3 (Monday) will feature two works from alumnus and emeritus professor Larry Austin, along with new compositions from students. Spectrum is a long-standing concert series for the Division of Composition Studies which features works by UNT students, faculty and alumni.

"The Spectrum concert series pre-dates my own arrival at UNT in 1992," said Joseph Klein, Distinguished Teaching Professor and chair of the Division of Composition Studies. "But the genesis of this particular program, which features work by Larry Austin, is intended as a celebration of his years of service to the university, as well as the recent donation of his entire body of work – scores, recordings and writings – to the UNT Music Library."

The program will feature two works by Austin – one that includes a viola and computer music and one that incorporates piano and computer music.

"In the piece I'm performing, the computer sounds like multiple pianos mixed in with purely electronic sounds," said Steven Harlos, professor of piano and chair of Keyboard Studies. "The piano is amplified and mixed in with the computer music. It will be a surround sound performance with sound coming from eight channels around the room. The piece comes out differently from one performance to another, so each performance is a unique musical iteration."

There also will be unique acoustic and computer music performances of works by seven student composers.

"The audience can expect a wide variety of musical styles in addition to a blend of traditional instruments and music technology," Klein said. "This program will really highlight the diversity of our composition program at UNT and the talent of our students, in addition to the work of our distinguished colleague Larry Austin."

The free event will be held in the Merrill Ellis Intermedia Theater in the Music Building, located at the south corner of Avenue C and Chestnut Street, Denton.
