DENTON (UNT), Texas – When the University of North Texas opened its doors in Denton on Sept. 16, 1890, founding President Joshua C. Chilton declared the university's aim to "become leaders in the education of the young men and women of Texas." More than 125 years later, that mission has spread beyond the state, and more than 2,500 international students from 122 countries attend the flagship Denton campus.

To celebrate the growing diversity at UNT, and to enrich the UNT and Denton communities, UNT-International will host several events throughout April to celebrate Great Global Citizens Month. Numerous studies have shown how diversity expands a person's views on the world around them.

Some of the events include:

  • April 7 (Thursday): the Korean Festival will be held from 2– 7 p.m. at the Library Mall outside UNT's Willis Library, 1506 W. Highland St.
  • April 8 (Friday): the first Global Grounds Café will be held from 3 – 4:30 p.m. in Room 215 of Marquis Hall, 1511 W. Mulberry St. The event will highlight the country, food, culture and history of Saudi Arabia.
  • April 12 (Tuesday): the Japanese Spring Festival will be held from 2– 7 p.m. at the Library Mall outside UNT's Willis Library, 1506 W. Highland St.
  • April 15 (Friday): the Flag Parade will start at 11 a.m. at Marquis Hall and will end at the Library Mall. A ceremony at 1:30 p.m. that will dedicate UNT's new University Union is part of this year's event, which will kick off University Day at UNT. During the parade, international students will wear traditional and inspired clothing from their native countries as they carry their nations' flags. The African Drum Ensemble from the College of Music will lead the student parade, which celebrates UNT's academic heritage and Mean Green spirit.
  • April 21 (Thursday): the International Fair and Market at EarthFest from 4 – 7 p.m. at the Library Mall.
  • April 22 (Friday): the second Global Grounds Café will be held from 3 – 4:30 p.m. in Room 215 of Marquis Hall, 1511 W. Mulberry St. The event will provide information about the country, food, culture and history of Bangladesh.
  • April 23 (Saturday): the Basant Kite Festival will be held from 12:30 to 4 p.m. The event will take place off campus at Pavilion 3 at North Lakes Park, 2001 W. Windsor in Denton. Basant is an annual kite festival held in India to signify the arrival of the spring season. Food and kites will be available for purchase.
