DENTON (UNT), Texas – The University of North Texas's One O'Clock Lab Band and UNT jazz choir made up of jazz voice majors will perform with Bobby McFerrin on Feb. 5 at 8 p.m. as a part of the Glenn E. Gomez Endowment concert. The performance will be at Winspear Hall in the Murchison Performing Arts Center, 2100 Interstate 35 Frontage Road, Denton.

McFerrin is a 10-time Grammy winner and vocal innovator known for his worldwide hit song Don’t Worry Be Happy and his multi-platinum duo album Hush with cellist Yo-Yo Ma. McFerrin improvises most of his performed music in a form of scat singing.

"There has always been a super distinctive aspect to McFerrin that has caused him to defy boundaries and labels," Jennifer Barnes, assistant professor of vocal jazz studies said. "People don’t classify him as a jazz or pop singer. He performs and teaches music without the traditional boundaries, which is an important capability for our students to learn in this era of music."

This performance will give the audience a chance to hear talented jazz voice students and the accomplished One O'Clock Lab Band, alongside McFerrin. The student musicians will work with McFerrin for four days, then perform in concert with him, using the tips and skills he teaches them.

"This opportunity is like no other learning experience because of the breadth of his experiences," Barnes said. "The Gomez Residency and the Fine Arts Series are coming together to provide a rare experience for our students to be challenged in a way that is different from going to class or attending a concert. It is four days of learning from and exposure to such a talented artist."

Tickets are $20 for the public, $10 for UNT faculty, staff and Alumni Association members, free for UNT students. Students must reserve their free ticket at the Murchison Performing Arts box office, 2100 Interstate 35 Frontage Road, Denton.
