DENTON (UNT), Texas -- University of North Texas Student Government Association President Rudy Reynoso, a junior communications and Spanish double major, has been appointed by Governor Rick Perry to serve as the UNT System’s student regent from June 2013 through May 2014.

“Serving as student body president for UNT in Denton over the past year has given me a great perspective of the needs and concerns of all students,” Reynoso said. “I’m looking forward to getting to know the issues important to students at UNT Dallas and the UNT Health Science Center in Fort Worth.”

As student regent, Reynoso said his primary goal will be to serve as the voice for student concerns on issues including transportation, technology and campus growth.

“I congratulate Rudy Reynoso on his appointment as a student regent,” said UNT System Chancellor Lee Jackson. “Rudy will take on the most important responsibility a student in Texas public higher education can hold. He will represent all UNT System students in Board of Regents discussions and will provide valuable insight on decisions that affect all of our students.”

Authorized by the Texas Legislature in 2005, student regents hold one-year terms beginning in June and are charged with representing the interests of students, the State of Texas and the university system. Reynoso is among 10 students Perry appointed to their respective university system boards.

While not a voting member of the nine-member UNT System Board of Regents, Reynoso may serve on task forces, committees and special commissions. Reynoso will attend Board of Regents meetings and participate in other activities required by the Office of the Governor and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
