DENTON (UNT), Texas - In 1990, an upstart sketch comedy company began playing some of the hottest venues in the Chicago comedy scene. The group landed a recurring spot on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and came to be known as The Upright Citizens Brigade. Early members included founder Amy Poehler, Matt Walsh, Adam McKay and others who would go on to appear on Scrubs, Saturday Night Live and a myriad of other top-rated television shows and box office hits. UCB’s touring company comes to the UNT University Union Lyceum at 7 p.m. Nov. 17 (Thursday) for a night of exciting improv as part of the Mary Jo and V. Lane Rawlins Fine Arts Series’ 113th season.

“The Upright Citizens Brigade Touring Company will advance the Fine Arts Series’ goal to bring top-tier artistic talent to the University of North Texas,” said Tyler Hicks, graduate assistant for the Fine Arts Series. “Sketch comedy shows how a team can come together to create beautiful art, and UCB is one of the quintessential sketch comedy companies.”

Before taking the stage, UCB will join the university’s Improv Club for a workshop aimed at enhancing the students’ sketch comedy skills and performance abilities.

The performance will offer an unpredictable evening of improv where attendees may also encounter a future Daily Show correspondent or sitcom star.

“It’s a rare opportunity for students and guests to witness an ensemble of artists at the top of their craft before they become household names,” Hicks said.

The event is free for all UNT students, $15 for UNT faculty, staff and alumni and $25 for the general public. For more information about this and other Fine Arts Series events, visit the Fine Arts Series on Facebook, Twitter or visit studentaffairs.unt.edu/fine-arts-series
