UNT Visiting Writers Series returns Sept. 27

DENTON (UNT), Texas – The University of North Texas will host three nationally renowned authors this fall as part of the UNT Visiting Writers Series.

Each semester, Creative Writing in the Department of English invites distinguished authors to the Denton campus for a series of readings and book signings. 

The fall 2018 edition of the series begins Sept. 27 with poet Eduardo Corral. All events are free and parking is available at the Union Circle Garage. Barnes and Noble at UNT will have the featured writers’ books available for purchase during each evening reading. 

  • Sept. 27 (Thursday) — Eduardo Corral's first book, “Slow Lightning,” won the Yale Series of Younger Poets competition in 2011. His poems have appeared in “Ambit,”“The New Republic,” “Ploughshares”and “Poetry Magazine.” He's the recipient of a Whiting Writers' Award, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship as well as a Hodder Fellowship and the Holmes National Poetry Prize, both from Princeton University. He teaches in the Creative Writing program at North Carolina State University.

  • Oct. 24 (Wednesday) — Colin Barrett's first collection of stories, “Young Skins,” won the 2014 Frank O'Connor International Short Story Prize, The Guardian First Book Award and the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature. Barrett was one of the 5 Under 35 honorees for the National Book Foundation in the United States in 2015. One of his stories, “Calm With Horses,” is being made into a feature film.

  • Nov. 8 (Thursday) — Lucas Mann is the author of “Captive Audience: On Love and Reality TV,” “Lord Fear: A Memoir” and “Class A: Baseball in the Middle of Everywhere.” His essays and stories have appeared in “Guernica,” “BuzzFeed,” “Slate,” “Wigleaf”and “The Kenyon Review,” among others. He has received fellowships from United States Artists and the National Endowment for the Arts. He teaches writing at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
