Angie (Wilson) Cartwright, an assistant professor in the Department of Counseling and Higher Education in the College of Education at the University of North Texas, has been selected as the school’s inaugural Presidential Early Career Professor.

“Upon receiving the news of my selection, I was excited and in a bit of disbelief,” Cartwright said. “There are so many wonderful members of the faculty here at UNT, and I am honored to be selected by the provost and the committee for this prestigious designation.”

Cartwright, who joined the UNT faculty in 2015, will receive $50,000 in research support as part of her new designation. She said she will use the funds to continue her work of promoting mental health and multicultural competencies among underserved communities including people of color and offender populations.

“I am grateful and thankful to President (Neal) Smatresk and Provost (Jennifer) Evans-Cowley for this honor and for contributing to my continued success as a researcher and scholar,” she added.

College of Education Dean Randy Bomer said that when he joined UNT last year, he was happy to hear that Cartwright was working with the currently or formerly incarcerated populations.

“The significance and potential impact of her work is tremendous,” Bomer said. “She’s paying attention to essential mental health issues with parts of the population that most people are happy to overlook.”
