DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Students from the University of North Texas College of Visual Arts and Design’s fashion design program took home top prizes from the 2018 Fashion Group International of Dallas Scholarship Competition. UNT had a total of 21 garments or accessories selected on either the runway or mounted exhibition at the event, held April 20 at Dallas Market Center.
“The awards definitely show the success and efforts of our students and the fashion design program,” said Li-Fen Anny Chang, associate professor of fashion design and program coordinator. “Through a rigorous curriculum, students have been able to develop the skills needed to conceptualize, present and construct finished garments from original designs. We hope these wins boost students’ motivation and confidence.”
A panel of professional fashion designers and stylists judged the competition, which featured Erin Wasson, model and jewelry designer, as keynote speaker. 
UNT’s Asia Montague won the Paris American Academy Couture Award and will receive full tuition for the summer semester at PAA, accommodations in Paris, round-trip airfare and a spending allowance. She also won the Best of Sewing Award and received a new sewing machine.
“I am so blessed to be given this opportunity to study haute couture sewing in Paris. This is extremely special because haute couture – the highest form of fashion – originated in France,” Montague said. “I look forward to learning these techniques and being immersed in the French culture. I am so grateful to the Lord, my instructors, the Paris American Academy and the FGI Dallas for such an amazing opportunity.”
