DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Three summer exhibitions at UNT on the Square will feature artwork from the Denton community – from youngsters to art veterans  –  as well as a poignant tribute to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The gallery, located at 109 N. Elm St., is open from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, with extended hours until 8 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. The exhibitions are free.
The fifth annual Outside the Box: DISD Student Art Exhibition, running May 3-10 (Thursday-Thursday), will feature a variety of art from kindergarten to 12th grade students in Denton ISD. Each art teacher selected two pieces from the 2017-18 school year for the exhibition. The public reception is from 5 to 7 p.m. May 3 (Thursday).
The photographs of Nicola McClean taken during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York City will be displayed in Ground Zero 360, running May 21 (Monday)-July 14 (Saturday). The exhibition features pictures and artifacts of first responders, as well as radio calls from that day and fragmented steel and granite from the World Trade Center. McClean is an Irish photographer who has shot portraits and landscapes around the world.
Members of the Visual Arts Society of Texas will present everything from painting to fiber art at the 29th Annual Juried Members Exhibition July 23 (Monday)-Aug. 15 (Wednesday). VAST, which was established in 1975 and boasts 142 members, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting artists and art lovers. The juror for the show is photographer Lynné Bowman Cravens, who received her master’s of fine arts degree from University of North Texas in 2015. The reception will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 24 (Tuesday).
The summer will bring other upcoming events, including the Thursday Night Music Series and an exhibition about Denton architect O’Neil Ford.
