DENTON (UNT), Texas -- When parents sit down to help the kids with math homework this fall, what changes can they expect from last year? Colleen Eddy, associate professor of mathematics education in the UNT College of Education, can discuss changes in state math standards that take effect this fall. "Some of the major changes will occur in eighth grade mathematics and algebra," Eddy said.

"Eighth grade math now contains more algebra standards, such as finding the slope and y-intercept for a line," Eddy said. "Algebra now has more emphasis on the mastery of quadratic equations that had previously been in algebra II, such as being able to write the quadratic equation in vertex or standard form.

"Why does it matter whether your child knows how to find a slope and y-intercept? The future of your child's education might hinge on it," Eddy said.

"Parents need to know that algebra concepts are considered the key mathematics for future success in courses that prepare students for college," Eddy said. "A student who is successful in a rigorous algebra program has been linked to greater success in college.

"To prepare for the changes, teachers are using resources created by region service centers, participating in targeted professional development programs and realigning instruction that will occur during the school year," she said.
