DENTON, Texas (UNT) – The College of Music's fall 2013 season is packed with a variety of events, including new faculty debut performances, a Brazilian music festival, the performance of a new edition of a 400-year-old masterwork, the College of Music Gala, anniversary celebrations for the A Cappella Choir and the Center for Experimental Music and Intermedia, and family-friendly concerts.
Two of the first concerts of the season feature Nathan Olson, a new part-time faculty member and co-concertmaster of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. He will perform in a chamber music recital Sept. 16 and as soloist with the UNT Symphony Orchestra Sept. 25. Later in the season, early music faculty member Petra Somlai will make her UNT debut as fortepiano soloist with the Baroque Orchestra and Collegium Singers Nov. 22.
Three events this season explore a variety of musical landscapes. Festival Brasileiro, Sept. 24-28, will highlight Brazilian classical, jazz and traditional music performed by UNT faculty and students, and artists from Brazil including guest composer, conductor and lecturer João Guilherme Ripper. The College of Music Gala – The Theatre of Debauchery, Deception and Delight – will raise funds for student scholarships. The Oct. 13 concert will feature student and faculty vocal soloists, the UNT Symphony Orchestra, the University Singers, and Fort Worth Opera general director Darren K. Woods as master of ceremonies. The Collegium Singers and members of the Baroque Orchestra will perform a 400-year-old masterwork, Monteverdi's 1610 Vespers, in a new Bärenreiter edition created by UNT faculty and students in Dallas on Oct. 25 and in Denton on Oct. 26.
This season also includes two special anniversaries. The Center for Experimental Music and Intermedia celebrates its 50th anniversary with the CEMIcircles festival, Oct. 4-6. Faculty, students, alumni and guest artists will participate in this festival of experimental music and intermedia, which includes an Oct. 4 performance at the Perot Museum in Dallas. The A Cappella Choir celebrates its 75th anniversary with a concert Nov. 19, which will include a work by Herbert Howells, written in remembrance of President John F. Kennedy.
Family-friendly events this season start with the Concert Band's Oct. 9 program Oscar-Winning Winds: The Music of John Williams, which will include selections from "Star Wars," "Harry Potter" and "Schindler's List." The annual Instrument Petting Zoo will be held Oct. 19 for children in second through fifth grade. The event includes a short concert, followed by a chance for children to try out a variety of instruments with the help of UNT music education students. Families can celebrate Halloween with UNT tuba and euphonium ensembles at the Tubaween concert Oct. 31. Sounds of the Holidays: An Evening with North Texas Jazz will end the season on Dec. 7. The famed One O'Clock Lab Band and Jazz Singers will play a variety of seasonal favorites including "Frosty the Snowman" and "Silent Night."
