UNT students will attempt world’s longest podcast this week

DENTON (UNT), Texas – A group of students at the University of North Texas will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest live audio stream this week.

Beginning 4 p.m. Nov. 15 (Thursday), students in the Department of Media Arts will live stream from a lecture hall in the university’s Radio, TV, Film & Performing Arts building. Their goal is to live stream through 2:30 a.m. Nov. 18 (Sunday). That would go beyond the current 52-hour record for the longest uninterrupted audio-only live stream online.

To be eligible for the record, the podcast must cover a single topic and have only five seconds of dead air time. UNT students will cover the topic of film, including giving an overview of history and discussing social issues within the industry. The students also will provide analysis of specific works such as “The Dark Knight” and “Singin’ in the Rain.” They have prepared enough material to broadcast 58 hours and 30 minutes.

“We’re very focused on reaching the goal, but beyond reaching the time limit we also want to make change and talk about subjects that many people aren’t talking about,” says Jarvis Lister, who will be among the UNT students participating in the world record-breaking podcast attempt.

The idea started out as a spur of the moment conversation during breakfast in the Media Arts Living Learning Community at UNT last spring. UNT’s Living Learning Communities house students of the same majors, areas of study, and general interests to foster success and deeper engagement with the university.

“The chemistry between these students is fantastic. They can talk for hours,” says Marielena Carpanzano, who is the staff mentor for the Media Arts Living Learning Community, and has helped guide students in their world record attempt.

The public is invited to view the podcast in person in Room 184 of the university’s Radio, TV, Film & Performing Arts building located at 1179 Union Circle in Denton, or hear the live audio stream on YouTube here.
