UNT offers a variety of summer workshops for all ages

DENTON, Texas (UNT) – The University of North Texas will offer a variety of workshops for students, professionals and families this summer.

Several workshops are offered all summer long through the College of Music for students, professional musicians and teachers. Camp Communicate, from June 9-13, offers children ages 5-12 with speech, language and hearing disorders a chance to make friends and practice communication. Grandparents University, offering an opportunity for grandparents and family members to receive a college experience with their grandchildren, will take place June 19-20. Throughout the month of July, the Mean Green Workshops offer debate workshops for middle and high school students, who can opt to take a one-week camp or all four weeks.

Music: June 6-8: Flute! Pre-College Camp Session I for high school level

These sessions emphasize musical performance and preparation. Daily classes include warm-up exercises, tone/technique development, and articulation studies, and provide opportunities for interaction of performer and listener. Speech & Hearing: June 9-13 Camp Communicate for children ages 5-12 with speech, language and hearing disorders

Through a variety of group activities, children will have the opportunity to make new friends, practice communication in a language-rich environment and have fun. Sponsored by the UNT Speech and Hearing Center, faculty, staff and graduate students organize and run the camp, which will be held at Merritt Bois D'Arc Buffalo Ranch and at the UNT campus Elm Fork Education Center. Music: June 9-13: Annual Lynn Seaton Jazz Double Bass Workshop for advanced high school, college, serious amateur and professional level

For dedicated jazz bass players working on upright technique, developing walking bass lines, small group performance, theory and history. Music: June 9-20: Conductors Collegium for music teachers of all levels

Music educators of all levels meet to discuss common goals, shared concerns and practical solutions with colleagues, performers and composers. As many as 40 participants will be selected to rehearse and perform on one of four concerts with the UNT Wind Symphony. Comments regarding rehearsal approach and conducting pedagogy will be made on video. Non-conducting participants will follow scores and listen to the clinician. Music: June 16-19: Marching Percussion Camp for high school students

The UNT Marching Percussion Camp trains high school percussionists in the tradition of the world-renowned Green Brigade Drumline. The workshop includes 10 hours a day of instruction and performance in a skill level-based ensemble. To register, visit http://music.unt.edu/percussion/summer.  

Music: June 16-20: UNT Keyboard Percussion Symposium (Formerly the UNT Marimba Workshop) for high school, college and professional level

Activities include private and group lessons with world class instructors, master classes, clinics, student and faculty performances, and technique labs focused on all aspects of keyboard percussion performance including grip methods (Traditional, Stevens, Burton and Six-Mallet grip) and extended performance technique. Music: June 16-20: String Orchestra Day Camp (Grades 2-9)

Students rehearse in elementary and middle school orchestras under the direction of guest conductors – Elementary String Class (pre-string orchestra); Elementary Orchestra (grades 4-5); Middle School Orchestra (grades 6-9). Students, who must have a minimum of nine months of string playing experience prior to the camp, also receive instruction in music theory and music history classes. Family: June 19-20: Grandparents University for grandparents or other family members and their grandchildren, ages 7-12

Participants pick two out of 10 "majors," where they get hands-on experience learning about robotics, computer animation, astronomy, veterinary medicine, apparel merchandising, storytelling and more. Pre-college and collegiate sessions are being offered to all ages. These include master classes, clinics, faculty-student recitals, mock auditions, wellness and stress reduction sessions, and Region and All-State audition preparation. Music: June 22-27: Vocal Jazz Workshop for vocalists of all experience levels and music educators

Participants are involved in every aspect of vocal jazz, from solo and ensemble performance to improvisation, pedagogy and jazz theory. Educators may attend a daily class devoted to vocal jazz directing, programming and rhythm section. Ensembles rehearse daily, preparing for the Friday evening public concert. Music educators will have a session each day with Jennifer Barnes that will focus on topics including repertoire, performance aesthetics, rhythm section and sound reinforcement equipment. Debate: June 22 to July 26: Mean Green Workshops debate camps for middle and high school students

The workshops are for students who are currently competing, or want to compete, in Lincoln-Douglas, public forum, congressional and policy debate tournaments. Workshops are offered in all four of these areas of debate, as well as in advanced oral interpretation and public speaking.  More than 200 students attend each summer from Texas and other states, making the Mean Green Workshops the largest debate summer program in Texas. Music: June 25-28: CLAREssentials High School Clarinet Workshop

This is an intensive, educational and fun workshop designed for advanced high school clarinetists. Daily events include group warm-ups, clinics addressing refinement of fundamental skills, masterclasses, chamber music coaching and evening recitals. Music: July 13-18: Jazz Combo Workshop for musicians of all levels, ages 14 and up

The workshop provides comprehensive studies in jazz combo playing and improvisation. Music: July 16-19: MS/JH (Jr. High/Middle School) Honor Choir Camp

Music: July 22-26: Mariachi Summer Camp for high school students

Camp participants will rehearse and learn about mariachi music. The camp culminates with a concert the final afternoon. Special guest instructor, Sr. Jose Hernandez, founder of Mariachi Sol de Mexico, will also teach students.

Music: Aug. 2-3: Alexander Technique for adult singers and instrumentalists
Instructor, Phyllis Richmond; Deadline July 20
Participants will also have the opportunity to experience Alexander Technique in a workshop setting, taught by Phyllis Richmond, M.A., MSTAT. Ms. Richmond will introduce the principles and practices of Alexander Technique that enable musicians to stop creating unnecessary tension and effort; improve posture, coordination, and breathing; and perform with increased comfort and ease by using the whole body in a new way.
