DENTON (UNT), Texas -- The University of North Texas Department of Mathematics  will offer free American Math Competitions for middle and high school students in the North Texas region during the 2014-15 academic year. UNT is the first university in the DFW area to host the competitions, which help students strengthen their math skills.

The eighth-grade level competition will take place Nov. 18 (Tuesday) from 5:30 to 6:10 p.m. The 10th- and 12th-grade level competitions will take place in spring 2015.

Registration for the eighth-grade level math competition is available online today through Oct. 20 (Monday).

Every year, students sign up for AMC competitions across the U.S. Normally, high schools host these competitions, but do not host competitions for eighth graders.

"The AMC competitions are a good way to promote mathematics among high school and middle school students," Neal Brand, UNT professor of mathematics, said. "Students who prepare for the competition gain a great deal of insight regarding mathematical problem solving."

Students who participate in the competitions are required to creatively use the techniques they learn in their classrooms to solve problems. The competitions consist of 25 multiple choice questions with a time limit of 40 minutes. Awards will be given to top performing students and an AMC pin will be given to the overall winner of the competition.

Spanish and large print versions of the exams will be available. Parents and teachers of participants are encouraged to come to an informal reception during the Nov. 18 competition, where light refreshments will be served.

More information about the competition is available here.
