DENTON (UNT), Texas -- The year was 1940, the school was named North Texas Teachers College and the notion of a wide-ranging music collection was in the works. The collaboration of Wilfred Bain, dean of the music school, school administrators and Columbia University recruit Anna Harriet Heyer would evolve into one of the largest educational music libraries in Texas and aid as a productive training-ground for many successful music librarians. The library, now called the University of North Texas Music Library, will celebrate its 75th anniversary April 22 (Friday) and April 23 (Saturday) with a concert and two-day symposium.

"We wanted to create a scholarly conference that would honor the accomplishments of the Music Library and the support we've given to countless musicians," said Mark McKnight, head music librarian at UNT. "But we wanted to do it in an exciting and fun way that celebrates the library's special collections, the music and the students."

The symposium will be held at 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. April 22 (Friday) and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 23 (Saturday) in The Forum, Room 140 of Willis Library, located at 1506 Highland St in Denton. The symposium will be followed by a reception in the Forum and concert in Voertman Hall of the College of Music at 6:30 p.m. All events are free and open to the community.

The two day extravaganza will feature students and faculty performances, presentations and lectures. These events will include a symposium, a gala reception and a concert. The symposium will feature a range of intellectual sessions from visiting speakers and in-house lecturers on a variety of music and library-related topics.

This occasion will also commemorate the establishment of the UNT Music Library 75th

Anniversary Endowment in Honor of Morris Martin. Martin previously served as head music librarian for 40 years.

McKnight said that naming the endowment after Morris was something special that the library staff wanted to do to honor Morris's longtime service to the Music Library and the university.

To coincide with the celebration, a treasures book will be available for purchase at the end of April. TheUNT Music Library at 75: Selections from Its Special Collections will be comprised of a brief history of the Music Library and representative pictorial examples from the Music Library's more than 100 special collections.
