DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Ila Manuj, associate professor of logistics in the University of North Texas College of Business, has earned a Marie Curie International Incoming Fellowship by the European Commission for a 16-month project to study supply chain complexity in Austria beginning in May.

"I am excited about working with and learning from highly accomplished researchers, conducting high-quality research, growing my international network of research collaborators and colleagues, and experiencing a long-term international stay," Manuj said.

Her research project aims to better understand, define and measure complexity in a supply chain -- a series of three or more entities involved in moving the product from a source to a customer.

"As the life cycle of a product shortens from several years to a few months, as product variety proliferates and customization levels increase, as customers become more demanding about quality and delivery schedules, and as supply chain constituents become more globally dispersed, the complexity of supply chains increases," she said. "Businesses have to learn to measure and manage this complexity to optimize profitability and customer satisfaction."

Manuj will be hosted by Logistikum, the logistics competence center at the FH-Steyr campus of the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria. She will work with Dr. Markus Gerschberger and his colleagues.

The fellowship will fund costs related to research, living, transportation and other expenses. Top-class scientific and technological researchers are selected for the fellowships to encourage cooperation between Europe and other parts of the world.

Manuj earned a bachelor of management science from Lucknow University, a master of international business from Indian Institute of Foreign Trade and a doctoral degree in business administration from the University of Tennessee.
