DENTON (UNT), Texas – The artists working in the University of North Texas' College of Visual Arts and Design can be inspired by anything – from their spouses to a Flaming Lips song lyric.
Those works will be displayed at the Annual CVAD Faculty and Staff Exhibition Nov. 12 (Thursday) to Dec. 10(Thursday) at UNT on the Square. The show will include ceramics, jewelry, metalsmithing, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture and even fashion design.
The 34 participants range from tenured professors to new faculty members, including Christian Fagerlund, senior lecturer in figure drawing, who is ready to show his art alongside colleagues whose work he admires and respects.
"It's also a wonderful opportunity for students to get a better sense of our individual creative processes, and see the diverse range of aesthetics in the college," he said.
Fagerlund drew a 7x8 portrait in charcoal and graphite of his wife Fowzia sitting on a stool, with a pensive look on her face, near a window.
"I regularly paint my wife Fowzia, often in our home – sleeping, bathing, dressing, reading, being," he said. "There were four main things that attracted me to the particular moment I aimed to capture in this piece: light, form, pattern and stillness."
Another new faculty member participating in the show is Alicia Eggert,assistant professor of studio arts and sculpture, who will display her piece "The Sun."
The piece features a lyric from The Flaming Lips song "Do You Realize" – "The sun doesn't go down/It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning 'round" – written in yellow neon and mounted on a circular space that spins.
"A lot of my work deals with time and how we visualize time – how we understand it and how it manifests itself in our daily lives," she said.
Eggert said she is excited to be in the exhibition.
"This is an opportunity to introduce myself to the UNT community and the DFW community at large," she said.
inThe annual event usually takes place at both UNT on the Square and the UNT Art Gallery, but the UNT Art Gallery will be closed from Oct. 18 to Jan. 21 to undergo more modern and energy efficient renovations, including new lighting and walls.
