DENTON (UNT), Texas – The fall 2014 season of UNT's College of Music will once again feature special concerts that are fast becoming perennial favorites, including the College of Music Gala and the Sounds of the Season Holiday Concert, as well as a dazzling array of jazz, operatic, symphonic, chamber and experimental music performances. There is truly something for every musical taste!

Students, faculty and guest artists will be coming together to create the college's vibrant music scene, starting with the Sept. 3 faculty recital featuring jazz voice professor Jennifer Barnes and others, including jazz saxophone professor Brad Leali and jazz piano professor Stefan Karlsson. The Sept. 8 Brass Fanfares! concert highlights the collaboration of graduate students from brass studies with visiting trumpet professor Allen Vizzutti. Vizzutti has worked with jazz legends such as Chick Corea and Doc Severinsen, and on several movie soundtracks, including those for Back to the Future and Star Trek. The faculty/student collaboration continues with a Sept. 10 recital that includes Dvořák's Serenade for Winds and Mozart's Gran Partita, a work noted for its unusual instrumentation (including two basset horns) and proportions.

One of the college's newest faculty members, early keyboard professor Petra Somlai, will present a faculty recital on Nov. 12, also featuring Cynthia Roberts on violin, Daphne Gerling on viola and Alan Whear on cello. Somlai was the 2010 winner of the first prize and special public prize at the International Fortepiano Competition in Belgium – the biggest competition in that field. This performance is followed by a Nov. 22 concert of Bohemian music that will showcase Somlai's top early music students.

UNT Opera will present two programs this fall, including the dramatic concert version of Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville) on Sept. 21. This one-night-only performance will feature both singers and orchestra on stage for the comic masterpiece. UNT Opera's production of Lehár's The Merry Widow takes place Nov. 7, 9, 14 and 16. This English-language presentation of the classic operetta is filled with hilarious satire, touching romance and unforgettable melodies.

Ensemble concerts and seasonal fan favorites make up a large part of this semester's offerings. The Symphony Orchestra begins its season with a Sept. 26 concert that includes Rimsky-Korsakov's colorful symphonic poem Scheherazade. Also billed as a celebration of the recent release of conductor David Itkin's book Conducting Concerti, the concert also includes a performance of Ginastera's Harp Concerto with faculty member Jaymee Haefner and a meet the author event prior to the concert.

The Oct. 12 College of Music Gala: A Symphonic Celebration of Popular Song includes two special guest artists, classical saxophonist Eugene Rousseau and legendary trombonist (and alumnus) Tom "Bones" Malone, of Blues Brothers and CBS Orchestra fame. The program includes chart toppers from throughout the decades, such as "My Girl" and arrangements from Porgy and Bess and South Pacific. All proceeds will support music student scholarships.

Two concerts this season will also honor veterans, starting with the Brass Band's Salute to American Veterans on Nov. 10. The next evening, the University Singers premiere a new composition by alumnus Kevin Walczyk, Drifting Gently Through Endless Beauty, which incorporates prose by Pulitzer Prize winning war correspondent Ernie Pyle, an unattributed poem dedicated to the U.S. Marine Corps and sacred texts from the Bible.

Jazz favorites include the annual fall One O'Clock Lab Band© concert on Nov. 25. The concert includes guest trumpeter Chuck Findley, who is a longtime "Tonight Show" band member and regular collaborator with artists such as B.B. King and Steely Dan. On Dec. 6, Sounds of the Holidays: An Evening with North Texas Jazzpresented by the One O'Clock Lab Band, directed by Jay Saunders, and the UNT Jazz Singers, directed by Jennifer Barnes will include jazz arrangements of favorite holiday tunes in a concert that the whole family will enjoy.

The College of Music will also pay tribute to past UNT musicians in two concerts this season. The Nov. 3 Global Rhythms concert is a memorial for the late Jon Kellis, a former percussion student who was active in the steel drum ensemble. On Nov. 5, faculty and students present a tribute to George Morey, former UNT flute and composition professor. An influential teacher and mentor, Morey also served as conductor of the UNT Symphony Orchestra for 25 years.

New and experimental music will be highlighted this season as well. UNT's Center for Experimental Music and Intermedia will be hosting the International Confederation of Electroacoustic Music Conference from Oct. 1 – 4. The conference, which includes 20 presenters from around the world, features nightly concerts that are free and open to the public. On Oct. 13, faculty and students will give the UNT premiere of Music for Eighteen Musicians, the iconic 20th century minimalist work by Steve Reich.
