DENTON (UNT), Texas -- The University of North Texas College of Music is registering musicians for their summer workshops – and you don't have to be a college student to attend. This year, there will be a variety of jazz, instrumental and voice classes for musicians ages 14 and up.

For the first time, double bassists and harpists are invited to attend the UNT Summer String Institute's two sessions, which were only available to violinists, violists and cellists in past years. Musicians who attend session one of the workshop June 17-24 can look forward to a residency with the Baumer String Quartet – acknowledged as one of the finest young quartets in the country – which includes Dallas Symphony Orchestra co-concertmaster and UNT faculty member Nathan Olson. Participants in both series can benefit from private lessons, clinics, masterclasses and concerts presented by UNT string faculty, principal players of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and esteemed guest artists.

The ClarEssentials Jr. High and Middle School Clarinet Workshop returns for a second year to provide an intensive, educational and fun learning experience for students in grades seven and eight. This year's workshops will be offered in Frisco and Keller.

"We understand that parents may not be able to drive their child a great distance to get them to a camp, and that's why we are offering camps for Junior High and Middle School students in two locations," Kimberly Cole Luevano, associate professor of clarinet said. "Ideally, parents can choose the location that is most convenient. This helps us reach and serve more students."
Jazz studies will again provide a wide range of classes, performances and comprehensive studies for jazz vocalists and instrumentalists. This year, a vocal jazz educator seminar has been added that precedes the UNT Vocal Jazz Summer Workshop.

"The jazz workshops are an immersion experience," said John Murphy, chair of the Division of Jazz Studies. "For most of a week, every moment is devoted to playing, studying, and listening to jazz. Students of jazz bass, jazz voice, and jazz small group playing will end the week with more fluency in the jazz language."
