UNT-based research center awarded 2012 Tech Titan Award

DENTON (UNT), Texas -- The Net-Centric Software and Systems I/UCRC, a research center based at the University of North Texas, has been selected as the 2012 Tech Titan of the Future at the university-level by the Metroplex Technology Business Council.

The award recognizes higher education institutions in the Dallas-Fort Worth region that encourage and support students in choosing engineering and technology-related disciplines as a preferred path.

“All the research performed by the center is industry driven. This motivates students participating in the research projects, because they realize that what they are doing is practical and has relevance,” said Dr. Krishna Kavi, professor of computer science and engineering and director of the Net-Centric Software and Systems I/UCRC. “In most cases, students find internships and employment with the member companies.”

A joint venture between academic, government and commercial institutions, the Net-Centric Software and Systems Industry/University Cooperative Research Center focuses on fundamental research needed for the development and deployment of software and applications into cloud and net-centric environments – software and information available over a network or in a central location rather than on individual computers.

The center, which is based in UNT’s College of Engineering, was established by the National Science Foundation in 2009. The center also includes Arizona State University, the University of Texas at Dallas, Missouri University of Science and Technology, Southern Methodist University and more than 20 industry partners.

Kavi accepted the award on Aug. 24 (Friday) at the Tech Titans Gala. The Tech Titans Awards were launched in 2001 to recognize outstanding technology companies and individuals in the North Texas area who have made contributions during the past year locally, as well as to the technology industry overall. UNT also won the Tech Titan of the Future at the university-level for its summer Robocamp for Girls program in 2010.
