DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Members of the UNT community and the public are invited to hear music from the Sandborn Collection at the university's Music Library Aug. 28 (Thursday).

The concert will take place at 3 p.m. in the Sandborn Room, Room 430A of UNT's Willis Library, 1506 W. Highland St.

The Sandborn Room is home to the Music Library's collections of rare books and scores, and is named after longtime Denton resident and former UNT music librarian Edna Mae Sanborn. The music rare book collection in the original Sandborn Room outgrew its space and now resides in a new, larger reading room which opened in April and will serve as the concert space.

The concert is will feature music by Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Jean-Baptiste Lully, among others, all of whom are represented in the collection. The original music scores will be available for audience members to view.

The concert will feature performers from the UNT College of Music and the Music Library. Performers will use the Model B Ampico Knabe piano and other pieces from the rare music collection. Following the live music concert, music will be played from wax cylinders, shellac 78rpm discs, and piano rolls from the Joe Morris and vintage sound recording collections.

Edna Mae Sandborn, a 1963 graduate of UNT (then North Texas State University) and a 1924 graduate of Lawrence College, served as the assistant music librarian in the university's Music Library from 1963 to 1973.

Sandborn remained active in the Denton community and as a member of the Friends of the UNT Libraries until her death in 1989. Her daughter, Elinor Pape McNabb, gave the UNT Foundation $20,000 to establish the Edna Mae Sandborn Memorial Fund in 1989 with the intention of renovating the space which became the Edna Mae Sandborn Music Rare Book Room in the Willis Library from 1991 through early 2014. The newly opened Sandborn Room displays only a small selection of the collection's holdings, most of which are stored elsewhere in the Music Library.
