DENTON, Texas (UNT) -- Marking a Course, a collection of figurative artworks that convey meaning through distinct mark making, will be at the UNT Art Gallery, 1201 West Mulberry St. in Denton, Feb. 18 (Thursday) - March 29 (Saturday). The opening reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. Feb. 20, with the artists' talks at 6 p.m.

The exhibition will have works from artists David Ballin, Matt Duffin and Michael O'Keefe. Each artist's approach includes an element of paradox through humor, absurdity, temporality or chance. The resulting exhibition will attempt to be a journey through the many faces of being a human.

  • Bailin, who lives and works in central Arkansas, used his experiences in New York Theater to depict characters and their scenes as situations connected to the dream process.
  • Duffin is a native Texan who lives and works in northern California. His narrative, inward-looking encaustic paintings combine a desire for perspective drawing with themes of solitude and irony.
  • O'Keefe, who lives and works in the North Texas region, uses the his art as forms of expression and seeks a new visual language to compose figures, as if by natural phenomenon rather than human control.

UNT Art Gallery exhibition and lecture programs for 2013-14 are supported by the Mary Jo and V. Lane Rawlins Fine Arts Series; a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts; Humanities Texas, the state partner of the National Endowment on the Humanities; and the College of Visual Arts and Design Visiting Artist and Scholar Series as well as the College of Visual Art and Design departments and their individual academic programs.
