Five Hatton W. Sumners Scholars will join UNT in fall

DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Five students entering the Master of Public Administration program this fall at the University of North Texas have received Hatton W. Sumners Scholarships, which are awarded to civically engaged students who show leadership potential.

Each award of $27,000 provides for full coverage of tuition and fees and a monthly stipend for 16 months.

The five recipients are:

  • Alisha Byerly of Piedmont, Okla., who received a bachelor's degree from Texas Woman's University
  • Carolyn Chavez of Belen, N.M., who received a bachelor's degree from the University of New Mexico
  • Timothy Clark of San Antonio, who received a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio
  • Angela Manglaris of Grapevine, who received a bachelor's degree from UNT
  • Calvin Manuel of Powder Springs, Ga., who received a bachelor's degree from Kennesaw State University

More than 150 UNT students have received a Sumners Scholarship in Public Administration since its inception in 1976. Applicants are invited to the UNT campus for interviews each year in early May, and five finalists are selected from the national pool.

About Hatton W. Sumners Foundation

The purpose of the Dallas-based Hatton W. Sumners Foundation is to encourage citizen engagement in government through an understanding of the principles of democracy and the essential role that citizens have in preserving self-government.

The Foundation was established by Hatton W. Sumners who served as a member of Congress from Dallas from 1912 until his voluntary retirement from office in 1947.
