Film professor can discuss appeal of horror movies for Halloween

Director Guillermo del Toro's "Crimson Peak," which hit theaters Oct. 16, is the latest horror film released a few weeks before Halloween. Set in the 19th century, the movie follows a young woman trying to decipher the ghostly visions haunting her new husband's remote mansion. It will be followed Oct. 23 (Friday) by "Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension," the sixth movie in the Paranormal Activity series.   

Harry Benshoff, professor of media arts at the University of North Texas, is available to discuss aspects of horror movies and their appeal to audiences. Benshoff is the editor and an author of A Companion to the Horror Film, which covers everything from the history of horror movies to the latest critical approaches to the genre through 30 essays from different scholars. Also the author of a book on the American gothic soap opera "Dark Shadows," Benshoff teaches a course on gender and sexuality in horror films.
