The University of North Texas will be treated to musical performances in February from two national acts – the Count Basie Orchestra and the Kenny Werner Trio. Both concerts are sponsored by the Mary Jo and V. Lane Rawlins Fine Arts Series

What: The University of North Texas will be treated to musical performances in February from two national acts – the Count Basie Orchestra and the Kenny Werner Trio. Both concerts are sponsored by the Mary Jo and V. Lane Rawlins Fine Arts Series.

When: The Count Basie Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 6 (Wednesday) and the Kenny Werner Trio will perform with The One O’Clock Lab Band at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28 (Thursday).

Where: Both concerts will take place in the Winspear Performance Hall of the Murchison Performing Arts Center, 2100 N. Interstate 35, Denton.

Cost: Tickets are free for UNT students and cost $5 for a student guest ticket (limit one); $10 for UNT staff, faculty and alumni and $20 for the general public. They can be purchased at www.theMPAC.com or by calling 940-369-7802.

Background:

Count Basie Orchestra

The Count Basie Orchestra has spent more than 80 years entertaining audiences with its jazz music, continuing its legacy after the 1984 death of its founder Count Basie. The band has won 18 Grammy Awards, appeared in movies and television, and performed around the world.

Kenny Werner

Renowned pianist and composer Kenny Werner will perform with bassist Johannes Weidenmueller and drummer Ari Hoenig, who studied at UNT in the 1990s and was the drummer for the One O’Clock Lab Band. The trio is known for their improvisation. Werner’s work No Beginning No End won the 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship Award. This concert is jointly funded along with the Glenn E. Gomez International Artists Endowment for Jazz Studies.
