DENTON (UNT), Texas — Eleven students from the University of North Texas and other universities from around the U.S. will attend this year’s Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference after receiving awards that cover registration and meals and lodging during the conference.
The Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference is hosted each summer by the Frank W. Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism, which is housed in UNT’s Frank W. and Sue Mayborn School of Journalism. Since it began in 2005, the conference has become one of the nation’s preeminent gathering of writers, attracting more than 300 participants who are interested in narrative nonfiction and speakers such as Ira Glass, Joyce Carol Oates, Richard Rhodes, Hampton Sides, Gay Talese and Luis Alberto Urrea. This year’s conference takes place July 19-21 (Friday-Sunday) at the Hilton DFW Lakes Executive Conference Center in Grapevine, Texas, and features authors Susan Orlean and Rick Atkinson and journalist and screenplay writer Skip Hollandsworth as keynote speakers.
The Dallas Morning News provided awards for students from racial and ethnic minority groups who are currently enrolled or are May graduates of any college or university. This year’s award recipients, all of whom are from UNT, are:
•Jazzmyn Coker-Dancy of Bedford, Texas
•Madiha Kark of Denton, Texas
•kYmberly Keeton of Houston, Texas
•Christian McPhate of Denton, Texas
•Chido Muchemwa of Denton, Texas
The Elizabeth Marshall Memorial Awards were open to current students and May graduates of the Mayborn School of Journalism and the Mayborn Graduate Institute. This year’s recipients are:
•Lindsey Bertrand of Carrollton, Texas
•Annette Nevins of Plano, Texas
The Mayborn Conference Award was open to current students and May graduates of the Mayborn School of Journalism and the Mayborn Graduate Institute, and students from community colleges and transfer students who plan to enroll in the school or institute for the fall 2013 semester. This year’s recipient is:
•Lola Obamehinti of Keller, Texas — University of North Texas
The Up-and-Comer Award was given to a student currently enrolled at a community college or university who has a minimum grade point average of 3.0. This year’s recipient is:
•Eric Nishimoto of Prosper, Texas — University of North Texas
The Jillian and Noah Bunn Award was open to current students and May graduates of the Mayborn School of Journalism and the Mayborn Graduate Institute, and students from community colleges and transfer students who plan to enroll in the school or institute for the fall 2013 semester. This year’s recipient is:
•Meagan Flynn of Austin, Texas — Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa
The Joan Donaldson – Pleasant Hill Farm Award was provided by Pleasant Hill Farm in Ceresco, Mich., which grows organic blueberries. Joan Donaldson, the co-owner of the farm, is a writer and was a workshop leader at past Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conferences. The award was open to a student at any college or university. This year’s recipient is:
•Charles Scudder of Carbondale, Ill. — Indiana University
