DENTON, Texas (UNT) – Twenty-nine senior fashion design majors will show off their creations at the annual ArtWear fashion show at 6 p.m. May 3 (Saturday) at the Gateway Center Ballroom, 801 North Texas Blvd.

The runway show, sponsored by Neiman Marcus, features garment designs selected by fashion industry professionals in the fashion design program in the College of Visual Arts and Design. ArtWear is the senior exit review for the students who are majoring in fashion design.

Participants will vie for cash awards in several different categories, including "Best Collection."

"Much like the fashion industry, your designs must be selected by buyers (jurors) and accepted by the consumers (audience)," said Janie Stidham, fashion design program coordinator and associate professor in the College of Visual Arts and Design. "Fashion is a very competitive business with constant change, and students must be innovative and on top of their game to compete and be successful."

Senior fashion design major Chassity Ellison is excited about showing off her pieces that have been inspired by the "selfie" phenomenon commonly seen on social media sites. Using different types of paint, she reinterpreted selfies on a cape, pencil skirts and tops made from denim.

She has anticipated participating in ArtWear since she entered the fashion design program. During the three years in the program, she has gone from learning how to sew to completely constructing garments. She has been designing her collection for ArtWear since December and sketched out more than 20 designs for the project.

"We're working hard all year round," she said. "The people will actually see not only did you design it, you made these clothes from scratch."

ArtWear is now in its third decade and participants have worked for companies such as Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, JCPenney and more.

This year's judges are Karen Dorff, design lecturer; Julie McCullough, Make + Made Studio; Neil Marek, Marek + Richard; Robert Richard, Marek + Richard; Emmanuel Tobias, Krystaline Brand Inc. and El Centro College; and Marianne Stayer Phillips, Stardust Celebrations.

The event will be emceed by UNT alumna Emily MacKinnon, a designer for Victoria Secret's PINK line.
