College of Music presents summer concerts, recitals

DENTON, Texas (UNT) – A variety of faculty and guests artists will perform this summer at UNT in conjunction with workshops presented by the College of Music.

Saturday, May 18: Texas Flute Festival

The summer series of concerts starts with guest artists events during the 36th Texas Flute Festival, at UNT on May 18. College of Music professors Stefan Karlsson (piano) and Lynn Seaton (bass) will perform at a guest artist recital featuring Holly Hoffman on jazz flute and Andrew Griffith on drums at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 18, in the Recital Hall as part of a day-long series of recitals and events. Karlsson, Seaton and eight guest artists will also perform at 5 p.m. in Voertman Hall. The day of events includes a masterclass at 12:30 p.m. and additional recitals at 9 a.m., 2 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. at various venues in the College of Music. Admission to the festival is $12 and includes admission to all concerts.

Friday, May 31: Pirastro Strings Elite Soloists Program Recital

The Pirastro Strings Elite Soloists Program Recital will include five top soloists who have come to the College of Music from all over the world to study with Professor of Double Bass Jeffrey Bradetich. The students and alumni performing in the recital are Heran Yang, Tian Yang Liu, Mariechen Meyer, Lauren Pierce and Kate Jones. Anastasia Markina will accompany on piano. The recital starts at 4 p.m. Friday, May 31, in Voertman Hall. Free.

Wednesday, June 5: High School Flute! Faculty/Guest Artist Recital

The High School Flute! Faculty/Guest Artist Recital will include Regents Professor of Flute Mary Karen Clardy and guest artists in concert at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, in Voertman Hall. Free.

Wednesday, June 12: North Texas Bass Camp Faculty Concert

The North Texas Bass Camp Faculty Concert will feature UNT’s Professor of Double Bass Jeff Bradetich, along with fellow bass camp teachers which include UNT alumni Dr. Jack Unzicker, from UT-Arlington; Carlos Gaviria, from Stephen F. Austin State University; and Dr. Gudrun Raschen, from Texas Woman’s University; and Jessica Gilliam-Valls, an educator and recording artist from Austin; and Andreas Bennetzen, a musician and composer from Copenhagen, Denmark; with alumna Janice Fehlauer accompanying on piano and UT-Arlington professor Martha Walvoord on violin. The concert is at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, in Voertman Hall. Free.

June 12, 15, 18 & 21: North Texas Conductors Collegium Concerts

Each year, the UNT Conductors Collegium workshop provides the opportunity for instrumental music educators of all levels to improve their conducting skills under the direction of UNT Regents Professor of Music Eugene Migliaro Corporon and other distinguished conductors. The series of North Texas Conductors Collegium Concerts will feature workshop participants conducting the UNT Wind Symphony. Concerts are at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 12; Saturday, June 15; Tuesday, June 18 and Friday, June 21 in Winspear Hall in the Murchison Performing Arts Center. Free.

Thursday, June 13: ClarEssentials Faculty Chamber Recital

The ClarEssentials Faculty Chamber Recital will showcase the UNT College of Music clarinet faculty – Daryl Coad, Deborah Fabian, Kimberly Cole Luevano and John Scott – at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 13, in the Recital Hall. Free.

Friday, June 14: ClarEssentials Guest Artist Recital

The ClarEssentials Guest Artist Recital will feature UNT alumnus and current Professor of Music and Distinguished Scholar at Southern Illinois University Carbondale Eric Mandat on clarinet at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 14 in the Recital Hall. Free.

Monday, June 17: UNT Marimba Workshop Faculty Concert

UNT percussion faculty members Christopher Deane and Mark Ford, Northwestern University percussion professor and UNT alumna She-e Wu, and Director of Percussion at Texas A&M University-Commerce Brian Zator will perform in the UNT Marimba Workshop Faculty Concert at 8 p.m. Monday, June 17, in the Recital Hall. Free.

July 8, 9, 10 & 11: UNT Jazz Winds Workshop Faculty Concerts

The UNT Jazz Winds Workshop Faculty Concerts will feature UNT professors Rodney Booth and Mike Steinel (workshop director), along with Chicago musician Rob Parton, all on trumpet; UNT alum Shelley Carrol and professor Brad Leali on saxophone; and UNT professors Tony Baker and Steve Wiest on trombone. The concerts start at 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, July 8 to 11, in Kenton Hall. Free.

Sunday, July 14: Jazz Combo Workshop Faculty Concert

The Jazz Combo Workshop Faculty Concert starts at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 14, in the Recital Hall. Free.

Saturday, July 27: UNT Mariachi Workshop Concert

The UNT Mariachi Workshop Concert featuring Mariachi Sol De Mexico founder José Hernández on trumpet, along with workshop participants, will be at noon Saturday, July 27, in Winspear Hall in the Murchison Performing Arts Center. Free.
