A graceful and classic Indian dance form takes the stage March 28 at the UNT University Union Lyceum Theater when the Fine Arts Series presents a performance by the Orissa Dance Academy.

The academy practices the Odissi form of dance, a lyrical and graceful classic dance that dates back to the second century B.C. The signature dance characteristics in Odissi include a deflection of the hips, arching hand movements, rounded body movements and stances such as the Tribhanga – the "tri-bent pose" that includes bending at the neck, waist and knee to form a soft "S" shape. Odissi dance originated in the eastern Indian state of Orissa.

The Orissa Dance Academy is a premier institute for teaching, producing and promoting Odissi dance, music and related art forms. It was founded in 1975 by legendary Guru Gangadhar Pradhan. The academy has held performances in Canada, Brazil, France, Japan, Germany, Korea and other places worldwide.

The 8 p.m. dance show in the Lyceum Theater of the University Union is free for UNT students with valid ID. Tickets are $10 for the public and $5 for UNT faculty, staff and Alumni Association members. Purchase tickets online at http://www.union.unt.edu/fas, by calling 940-565-3805 or at the information center desk on the third floor of the Union.
