Background:

Senior fashion design students at the University of North Texas make their fashion industry debut when models hit the runway in the designers’ best creations during the annual ArtWear juried exhibition.

Students have spent months working on their collections. They begin with sketches, prototypes and research during the winter break, and then construct the pieces during the spring semester.

ArtWear 2019 features the work of 33 students and will showcase a variety of designs including evening wear ensembles, sportswear separates, street inspired athleisure, menswear, gender neutral and plus size fashion. Some of this year’s collections include intricate beading and embroidery details while other students have explored their own dying techniques, sustainable fashion and blending of natural fibers. Students’ designs were judged by a panel of faculty and fashion industry entrepreneurs on originality, creativity, design, textile use, marketability and quality of construction.

The ArtWear fashion event has a 30-year history and has debuted many successful young designers including such notable alumni as Michael Faircloth, Nicolas Villalba, Finley Moll, Shirin Askari, Khanh Nguyen and Lucy Dang. Other successful ArtWear participants have gone on to work for companies such as Calvin Klein, Liz Claiborne, Fossil, Theory, Nicole Miller, Betsy Johnson, Ralph Lauren, Perry Ellis, Monique Lhuillier, Dillard's, Haggar and JCPenney.
