Activities:Has received National Science Foundation grants to preserve American Indian languages. Authored numerous articles and several books, including Dictionary of the Alabama Language and Saanich, North Straits Salish Classified Word List. Member of the Linguistic Society of America, the Society for the Study of the Indigenous Languages of the Americas, and the International Linguistic Association. Served as interim editor of the Southwest Journal of Linguistics. Was formally given a traditional name by the Elwha Klallam Tribe for his efforts in helping to preserve their language.
