DENTON (UNT), Texas — The University of North Texas has put the wheels in motion for a new bicycle sharing program.

UNT Transportation Services has partnered with VeoRide to bring a pilot program to campus that will enable students, faculty and staff to rent bikes for short periods of time.

“We are excited to offer VeoRide as an affordable option for students and a complement to our other on-campus transportation options,” said Stan Nixon, assistant director of Transportation Services at UNT.

The program, which launched last week, includes 100 teal VeoRide bicycles that are distributed throughout campus. An additional 180 UNT branded bicycles will be added in October.

"VeoRide looks forward to our partnership with the University of North Texas and making the bike share experience easy and enjoyable for all," said Candie Xie, CEO of VeoRide.

How to check out a bike

To use the bikes, UNT faculty, staff or students should sign up for the VeoRide app using their UNT email address. Registering with a UNT email address will give each user two coupons that each provide a free 15-minute ride. After using the coupons, rides can be purchased in 15-minute increments for $.50, or users can purchase a ride plan.

Signing up with a UNT email also provides members of the UNT community access to discounted, unlimited ride plans. UNT Transportation Services will pay part of the unlimited ride plan options – enabling students to pay $10 for a monthly plan (instead of the regular $13.99) or $40 (instead of the regular $48.99) for a yearly plan. The plan enables members to take multiple trips in a day, as long as each trip is under one hour. Students who want to ride for longer periods should lock the bike and then unlock it again.

Bikes will be available for checkout at Bruce Hall, the General Academic Building, Kerr Hall, Legends Hall, the Physical Education Building, Rawlins Hall, Victory Hall, West Hall and Fouts Field. Additional locations may be added in the future.

Bikes can be used off campus but must be returned to an on-campus location.
