DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Alice Giles, celebrated as one of the world's leading harp soloists, will perform a concert at the University of North Texas at 8 p.m. Oct. 22 (Wednesday) at Winspear Hall in the Murchison Performing Arts Center. The Performing Arts Center is located at 2210 North Interstate 35E in Denton. Giles' visit to UNT is part of the university’s Mary Jo and V. Lane Rawlins Fine Arts Series for 2014-15.

Jaymee Haefner, director of undergraduate studies in the UNT College of Music, is excited about Giles performing at UNT.

"Alice is an internationally known harpist and her presentation will discuss her adventures with the harp in Antarctica," said Haefner, who is also a harp senior lecturer at UNT.

Join Giles on a personal journey through music and film to honor her grandfather Dr. C.T. Madigan. Giles is offering her show on tour internationally as part of the centenary celebrations of the first Australasian Antarctic expeditions that took place from 1911 to 1914.

Giles will play sentimental favorites mentioned by Madigan in his diaries as well as new works by Australian composers Larry Sitsky, Martin Wesley-Smith, Nigel Westlake, Jim Cotter and Joshua McHugh. She will also feature the recorded sounds of the wind blowing through her harp while she was in Antarctica, woven together with words and song.

"I guarantee this will be a harp performance which breaks many of the pre-conceptions of the instrument, and will challenge the audience to see the harp in a completely new light," Haefner said.

UNT students can print their free ticket, while UNT faculty/staff/alumni and general public, may purchase their tickets at Untuniontickets.com. Tickets go on sale a month prior to the event.
