UNT on the Square offers art, music and shopping for the fall

DENTON (UNT), Texas – An array of art and music from the University of North Texas will be featured at its downtown gallery UNT on the Square this fall. Events include art exhibitions from faculty and staff, performances from College of Music students on Thursday nights and even an opportunity to buy artwork and music from students and faculty.

UNT on the Square is a part of the Institute for the Advancement of the Arts, which began five years ago to promote artistic and creative expression. The IAA also sponsors the Faculty Fellows program, which allows faculty members to take a semester off from teaching to pursue creative research in the arts, and the artist-in-residence program, featuring novelist Aleksandar Hemon for 2014-15.

UNT on the Square
Location: 109 N. Elm St., Denton
Hours: 9 a.m. - noon and 1 - 5 p.m. Monday - Friday, with extended hours until 8 p.m. on Thursdays and 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Saturdays
Cost: Free admission

Robert Jessup/Four Paintings, 2014
What: The exhibition from Jessup, professor of drawing and painting and 2013-14 Faculty Fellow, includes four monumental works that showcases his methodology of continuous improvisation that display a feel of drama and sense of narrative without relying on recognizable images or symbols.
When: The exhibition runs until Sept. 25 (Thursday).

Denton Hunger Project
What: An exhibition of photography taken by area soup kitchen clients.
When: Sept. 29 - 30 (Monday-Tuesday)
More: "Reimagine the City: A Forum on Sustainability in Denton," a discussion led by UNT's College of Public Affairs and Community Service, will take place at 7 p.m. Sept. 30. Denton City Councilman Kevin Roden will moderate the discussion. The panel will include Gene Gumfory, of the Shiloh Field Community Garden; Stan Ingman, applied gerontology professor and director of UNT's College of Public Affairs and Community Service; and Brian Daskam of Denton Municipal Energy.

Thursday Night Music
What: This program, now in its eighth semester, brings two performances a night from College of Music students, faculty and guests to audiences who might not attend on-campus concerts.
When: 7 - 9 p.m. Sept. 11, 18, 25 and Oct. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 (Thursdays)
More: Sept. 11 line-up includes 7-8 p.m. Ryan Ayres, solo piano, performing his new works and a Philip Glass piece; 8-9 p.m. The Hardbop Project, a band that was formed in spring 2014 after seeing The Cookers perform at UNT. Band leader Toshi Clinch decided to form a similar-style band made up of current jazz studies students from UNT and boasting a four-piece horn section and three-piece rhythm section.
Other performances will be announced via the UNT on the Square website.

IAA Fellows: Celebrating Five Years of Achievement
What: The IAA will celebrate its fifth anniversary by featuring the works of the faculty members who received semester-long fellowships that allowed them to concentrate on their artwork.
When: Oct. 13 (Monday) - Nov. 5 (Wednesday)
More: A reception hosted by Provost Warren Buggren will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 20.

The Everything UNT (on the Square) – An Artsy Pop-up Store
What: Students, faculty and alumni will sell artwork, CDs and other items timed to coincide with a Denton Main Street Association shopping weekend promotion and UNT Homecoming. The proceeds will go back to the entities.
When: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.Nov. 8 (Saturday)
More: The event is co-sponsored by the Mary Jo and V. Lane Rawlins Fine Art Series.

2014 Annual Faculty and Staff Exhibition
What: The works of artists in the College of Visual Arts and Design, one of the most comprehensive art programs in the nation, will be on display at UNT on the Square and the UNT Art Gallery.
When: Dec. 5 (Friday) - Jan. 15 (Thursday) at UNT on the Square. The exhibition will run from Nov. 6 (Thursday) to Dec. 6 (Saturday) at the UNT Art Gallery, 1201 W. Mulberry St. in Denton, on the first floor of the Art Building.
More: A reception will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Dec. 4 (Thursday) at both venues.
