UNT named a Military Friendly School for third year
DENTON (UNT), Texas -- For the third consecutive year, the University of North Texas has been selected for inclusion in G.I. Jobs magazine's list of Military Friendly Schools for 2013. UNT made the list for the first time in 2010. The ranking puts UNT in the top 15 percent of all colleges, universities and trade schools in the nation.
G.I. Jobs, a magazine for military personnel transitioning into civilian life, publishes the annual list to honor the colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America's military service members and veterans as students. Schools were chosen based on non-financial efforts to recruit and retain military and veteran students, as well as financial commitment, recruitment efforts and other academic accreditations.
A detailed list of schools will be included in the G.I. Jobs Guide to Military Friendly Schools annual and poster, both of which will be distributed to hundreds of thousands of active and former military personnel. UNT will also be listed online as a Military Friendly School.
"In an effort to increase the awareness of veterans as they transition from military to student life, it is wonderful that UNT has made the list of Military Friendly School for the third consecutive year," said Tockie V. Hemphill, Director of UNT's Veterans Center. "With an estimated 2,000 veterans and dependents, I would hope that this recognition from G. I. Jobs would prompt more students, faculty, and staff to self-identify so that we can continue and expand the programs and services offered."
UNT has an active Student Veteran's Association and offers emotional support through the Disability and Well-being Consortium, and the UNT Veterans Center first opened in 2009 to help navigate veterans through the transition from service to college.

UNT has signed an agreement with Barnes & Noble College as the new operator for the UNT Bookstore. Barnes & Noble College is set to take over operations of the university bookstore on Aug. 8.
Robert M. Citino, professor of history at UNT, has been selected to serve as a Visiting Professor at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Penn., during the 2013-14 academic year. He will assist in teaching core and elective courses within the college’s Department of National Security and Strategy. He will also conduct college-wide lectures and presentations, and lead faculty research and writing efforts.
Tomas Mantecon, associate professor of finance at UNT's College of Business, has been chosen to participate in the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program for the 2013-14 academic year.
Eric Nishimoto of Prosper, a student at the UNT Frank W. Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism, was named a National Winner in the Photo Illustration category of the Society of Professional Journalists’ 2012 Mark of Excellence Awards.
Ellie Meyer, A Radio, Television & Film senior, took first place in the UNT Fine Arts Series 12th annual Songwriter’s Competition. She received an invitation to the legendary Kerrville Folk Festival that hosts more than 100 songwriters over 18 days in May and June.
