UNT Libraries to present UNT Speaks Out on Alzheimer’s and dementia

What: “UNT Speaks Out: Alzheimer’s disease and dementia” – A University of North Texas professor, UNT Health Science Center professor and a psychology doctoral candidate will speak on different aspects of Alzheimer’s disease, including research, caregiving and the fear of dementia. The event is presented by the UNT Libraries.

When: 6-8 p.m. Feb. 28 (Thursday)

Where: The Forum on the first floor of UNT's Willis Library, which is located one block east of Highland Street and Avenue C (1506 W. Highland St.).

DENTON (UNT), Texas--A University of North Texas professor, UNT Health Science Center professor and a psychology doctoral candidate will speak on different aspects of Alzheimer’s disease, including research, caregiving and the fear of dementia, at UNT Speaks Out sponsored by the UNT Libraries.

The event begins at 6 p.m. Feb. 28 (Thursday) in the Forum on the first floor of UNT’s Willis Library, which is located one block east of Highland Street and Avenue C (1506 W. Highland St.)

The speakers for UNT Speaks Out include Meharvan Singh, professor and chair of the Department of Pharmacology and Neuroscience at the UNT Health Science Center. He will speak on “New Frontiers in Alzheimer’s Disease Research.” He will discuss the current state of the research, as well as future directions and challenges.

Bert Hayslip, Regents Professor in the UNT Department of Psychology, will speak on “Caring for a Loved One with Alzheimer’s disease.” He will discuss caregiving for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients and explain the demands on the caregivers.

Kyle Page, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Psychology, will speak on “Fear of Dementia.” He will discuss the psychological roots of fearing a dementia disease and identify how to understand and manage concerns related to fear of dementia.

Staff members from Arden Courts, a memory care community in Arlington, will offer a virtual experience that will allow participants to experience both the physical symptoms of age and the cognitive symptoms of Alzheimer’s and dementia. This activity will be from 4-6 p.m. and 8-9:30 p.m. on Feb. 28 in Room 035 on the first floor of Willis Library.

In addition, the Greater Dallas Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association will have a representative at the event to provide information about services available in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
