UNT Homecoming events Nov. 7 and 8 include bonfire and parade

DENTON (UNT), Texas -- The University of North Texas' Homecoming will take place Nov. 7 (Friday)-Nov. 8 (Saturday). The Homecoming theme this year is "Mean Green Circus: The Greatest Homecoming on Earth." Community festivities will kick off on Nov. 7 (Friday) with UNT's traditional Spirit March to the Bonfire at Apogee Stadium, one of the university's oldest traditions. The Nov. 8 (Saturday) events include the Homecoming Parade that starts at 1 p.m. and routes through the Denton square; tailgating at Mean Green Village; and the Mean Green football team taking on Florida Atlantic University at 6 p.m. at Apogee Stadium, 1251 S. Bonnie Brae, Denton.

This celebration is a collaboration between Mean Green Athletics and the Division of Student Affairs. All of the events are open to UNT students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members.

Events that are open to alumni and community members include:

Nov. 7 (Friday)

  • 7 p.m. Spirit March
    Beginning at Fraternity Row on Maple Street and proceeding to the bonfire site near UNT's Apogee Stadium, 1251 S. Bonnie Brae, Denton.
  • 8 p.m. Bonfire
    Lighting of the bonfire will be on the northwest side of Apogee Stadium. Alumni are invited to the Alumni Pavilion from 7:30 to 9:30 for viewing of the bonfire.

Nov. 8 (Saturday)

  • 7:15 a.m. Fun Run
    The free 5K intramural Homecoming Fun Run starts in front of the Pohl Recreation Center, 1900 Chestnut St., Denton. Preregistration is not required. Registration will take place before the race until 7:15 a.m.
  • 1 p.m. Homecoming Parade
    Watch the parade as floats proceed around the Denton square, along Hickory and North Texas Boulevard. The parade will end at North Texas Boulevard and Eagle Drive. Community members and UNT students, faculty and staff members are encouraged to create floats and enter them in the parade. The deadline for entering a float into the parade is Oct. 24 (Friday).   • 3:30 p.m.- 4:00 p.m. Greek Life Center Open House/Ribbon Cutting
    The new UNT Greek Life Center, located at 621 S. Welch St., Denton will host an open house beginning at 3:30 p.m.
  • 3 p.m. Mean Green Village Tailgating
    Tailgating around campus starts early and ends 30 minutes before kickoff. UNT organizations, departments and colleges, and some Denton businesses, will have tents at UNT's Apogee Stadium to add to the Homecoming spirit along with live music, the Junior Mean Green Fun Zone and the Mean Green March featuring the cheerleaders, dancers, marching band, head football coach Dan McCarney and the Mean Green football team.   • 6 p.m. Homecoming Game
    Mean Green vs. Florida Atlantic Owls. Tickets are free for students and start at $15 for everyone else. For more information about game tickets and packages for tailgating before the game, visit Mean Green Sports for ticket options.
