UNT experts available to discuss presidential, vice presidential debates
As you prepare for coverage of the presidential debates between President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney on Oct. 3, 16 and 22, and the vice presidential debate between Vice President Joe Biden and Rep. Paul Ryan on Oct. 11, consider these University of North Texas faculty members who will provide analysis of the debates.
Dr. Brian A. Lain is an associate professor of communication studies and director of UNT’s nationally ranked Debate Team, which was recently named the top debate team at a Texas college or university by the International Education Debate Association. Lain will analyze the tactics used in the debates by the candidates. In 2004, he discussed the presidential debates with Sam Donaldson of ABC News.

Dr. Matthew Eshbaugh-Soha, associate professor of political science, is available only to discuss the vice presidential debate on Oct. 11 and to give a preview of the presidential debates. He is the co-author of Breaking Through the Noise: Presidential Leadership, Public Opinion and the News Media and The President's Speeches: Beyond ‘Going Public.’ Eshbaugh-Soha has published research in American Journal of Political Science, Political Research Quarterly, Presidential Studies Quarterly and Congress and the Presidency, and has contributed chapters to Politics in the American States and Public Opinion and Polling around the World.

James E. Mueller is an associate professor in UNT’s Frank W. and Sue Mayborn School of Journalism and will discuss the political rhetoric used during the debates. Mueller is the author of Tag Teaming the Press: How Bill and Hillary Clinton Work Together to Handle the Media and Towel Snapping the Press: Bush’s Journey from Locker-Room Antics to Message Control. He has often written about journalism and politics.

The Best American Newspaper Narrative Writing Contest is the newest writing contest offered by the Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference.

Eleven UNT students will attend this year’s Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference after receiving awards that cover registration and meals and lodging during the conference. The Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference is held every summer by UNT's Frank W. Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism.
Jon Savage, a recent UNT graduate, is one of only 20 students in the nation to receive the 2013 Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Arts Award for $150,000 to attend graduate school. Savage was a member of both the McNair Scholars Program and the Honors College while he was at UNT.
