UNT educational psychologist will give advice on discussing Orlando shooting with children

Wednesday, June 15, 2016 - 14:30

Forty-nine people were killed and more than 50 injured by a gunman at a nightclub in Orlando, Florida, on Sunday. The event became the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. And on Tuesday evening, a 2-year-old on vacation with his family at a Disney World resort was dragged into a lagoon by an alligator as the child waded in shallow water. The child has not been found.

With prominent media coverage, it can be increasingly difficult for parents to shield their children from news about violent events.

Educational Psychologist Wendy Middlemiss at the University of North Texas can discuss how parents can talk to children about the shooting and the deaths, including how to address things seen on television and topics talked about during school. Middlemiss has been interviewed about this topic after other recent shootings.

Reach Middlemiss on her cell phone at 724-977-3067.
