DENTON (UNT), Texas -- University of North Texas College of Music doctoral student Clare Carrasco will travel abroad after earning a prestigious research award this year.

Carrasco, who is a doctoral candidate in musicology, received a fellowship from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst/German Academic Exchange Service to research in Germany this coming spring and summer. Her trip to Germany will allow her to study German archives relating to her dissertation titled "All Art is Under the Spell of Music: Music and Expressionism in Critical Discourse, 1918-1925."

"The UNT community is delighted with the way the German Academic Exchange Service has recognized Clare's innovative and contributive research," James Duban, director of the Office for Nationally Competitive Scholarships, said. "The recognition reflects admirably on Clare, her research mentor, the College of Music and UNT generally."

Carrasco's research explores articles in German-language newspapers and periodicals from the 1910s and 1920s to better understand the role that music played in the Expressionist Movement. As part of this project, she will consider three specific chamber works that critics at the time wrote about as "expressionist" but that current historians do not typically think of as Expressionist.

"I am excited to travel," Carrasco said. "I enjoy meeting people from many different places and experiencing new things, but I'm also excited to be able to focus exclusively on my research for an extended period of time."

Carrasco is writing her dissertation under the guidance of Margaret Notley, professor of music history in UNT's College of Music.

Carrasco's fellowship is just over $8,000 and includes a monthly stipend for living and research costs, as well as a travel allowance.

The Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst /German Academic Exchange Service is a private, publicly funded, self-governing organization of higher education institutions in Germany. It promotes international academic relations and cooperation by offering mobility programs primarily for students and faculty, but also for administrators and others in the higher education realm.
