DENTON (UNT), Texas -- The University of North Texas College of Music is gearing up for the spring semester, and February offers a variety of performances for audiences to enjoy. From jazz, to symphonic music and opera, there is something to fit everyone's taste. Below are a few highlights followed by a complete calendar of February performances.

  • The UNT Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Itkin, will perform Gustav Mahler's large-scale Symphony No. 6 in A minor at 8 p.m. on Feb. 3 (Wednesday) in Margot and Bill Winspear Hall. Sometimes referred to as his "tragic" symphony because of its ending, the audience at its 1906 premiere was said to be so moved that they were left silent and in awe. The UNT Symphony Orchestra hopes to do the same with their performance in February. Tickets are $10 for adults; $8 for seniors, students, children, UNT faculty/staff/retirees and groups of 10 or more. The performance is free for UNT students who may pick up a ticket with their student ID at the Murchison Performing Arts Center box office.
  • Tanya Darby, jazz trumpet assistant professor and director of the Three O'Clock Lab Band, will present her debut faculty recital at 8 p.m. Feb. 18 (Thursday) in the Music Building's Stan Kenton Hall. Darby, who has performed with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, and the Count Basie Orchestra among others, will begin the night of jazz accompanied by a sextet including UNT faculty and friends Pat Coil, piano; Andrew Griffith, drums; Fred Hamilton, guitar; Andre Hayward, trombone; Brad Leili; saxophone; and Lynn Seaton, bass. Later in the evening, she will be joined on stage by a 16 piece big band that will feature College of Music faculty members Jose Aponte, percussion; Rodney Booth and Jason Bergman, trumpet; and Chris McGuire and John Murphy, saxophone.
  • The Baumer String Quartet returns to UNT for a weeklong residency in February that will conclude with two collaborative recitals – one with faculty, and one with students. The first recital at 8 p.m. on Feb. 18 (Thursday) will feature College of Music faculty Susan Dubois, viola, and Eugene Osadchy, cello. The second concert will be held at 5 p.m. on Feb. 19 (Friday), and will include UNT students Josip Kvetek, viola; Dominic Kyung Seu Na and Sally Murphy, cello; and Yalira Machado Montejo, violin. It also will include a guest performance by Stephen Ahearn, Dallas Symphony Orchestra clarinetist. Both recitals are free and will be held in Paul Voertman Concert Hall in the Music Building.
  • UNT Opera joins the Concert Orchestra to present "Mother of Us All," an opera that chronicles the life of Susan B. Anthony and her tireless fight for women's suffrage. A collaboration between composer Virgil Thomson and writer Gertrude Stein, this modernist opera melds together both fictional and non-fictional characters from American history. Performances will be held at 8 p.m. Feb. 26 and March 4, and at 3 p.m. Feb. 28 and March 6. All shows will be held in the Lyric Theater at the Murchison Performing Arts Center and will feature pre-performance lectures 45 minutes prior to each event. Tickets range from $15 to $35.
