DENTON (UNT), Texas— University of North Texas students Cassie Holtz and Francisco Gonzalez both received a Clarence Ridley Scholarship from the Texas City Management Association.

The scholarships are awarded each year to two students who are earning master of public administration degrees from Texas universities. Each student is awarded $3,500, and his  or her home university is awarded $1,500 in credit toward Texas City Management Association and Texas Municipal League education events.

“TCMA’s selection of two UNT students for this award further affirms the MPA program’s reputation as the preeminent graduate program in Texas for students aspiring to public service careers in local government,” said Bob Bland, professor and chair of UNT’s Department of Public Administration.

UNT’s MPA program is ranked 8th in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in the area of city management and urban policy.

Gonzalez, from San Miguel, El Salvador, is expected to graduate in the summer of 2014.

“The aid and financial support of the scholarship will not only open many doors in my profession in public administration, but it will give me the opportunity to be a better asset to the community,” Gonzalez said.

Holtz, from Muskego, Wis., is expected to graduate in the spring of 2014.

“The scholarship has opened doors to invaluable networking and conference opportunities, and has alleviated financial stress associated with pursuing an advanced degree,” Holtz said.
