DENTON (UNT), Texas – Children, in grades K-12, are encouraged to participate in a free family activity to create landscaped platforms as part of the UNT Art Galley Saturday Series program arranged by the University of North Texas Art Galleries.

Visual artist Giovanni Valderas will lead the children in selecting materials from our natural world to create sculpted works of art during the "Cultivate Space" event from 1-3 p.m. Sept. 19 (Saturday) at the UNT Art Gallery, 1201 W. Mulberry St. in Denton.

Participants will receive Passports to Saturday Series passport books to record their thoughts and stickers highlighting their artistic talents. The passport books feature four entries, so children can use it for the remaining Saturday Series events throughout the year.

Valderas earned his MFA in drawing and painting from UNT's College of Visual Arts & Design. He is vice-chair of the City of Dallas' Cultural Affairs Commission. Three of his masterpieces hang in the U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic. Valderas is assistant director at Kirk Hopper Fine Art.

Members of UNT's National Art Education Association, who are studying to become art teachers, will assist children with their projects.

Saturdays in the UNT Galleries occurs four times a year. The Nov. 19 event will feature dancer Danielle Gergiou. It will be held at the UNT on the Square.

The series is sponsored by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts and aims to have children and their families engage with visual art through interactive and performance-based interpretation.
