DENTON (UNT), Texas – Malcon Pierce, who works as an animator for Walt Disney Animation Studios, will speak in the Department of Media Arts at the University of North Texas on Wednesday, Oct. 26 about the upcoming film “Moana.”

Pierce was the supervisor of animation for the film and will give students a behind-the-scenes look at production. He will follow up with a Q&A session.

“Moana has such a charm to her character that allows for such a wide range of acting,” Pierce said. “I love how much depth and variety this character has. I think because of this, more people will be able to connect with her.”

Pierce studied media arts and animation at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. He went on to work as an animator with Blue Sky Studios before making the switch to Disney, where he has since worked on films like “Tangled,” “Wreck-It Ralph,” “Frozen” and “Big Hero 6.”

Marielena Resendiz-Carpanzano, who is an event coordinator for the Department of Media Arts, said she is excited for students to learn from a professional animator like Pierce.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for UNT and Media Arts students to meet Malcon Pierce and to experience firsthand the process behind the scenes of animation [in the film “Moana”].”

The event is at 6 p.m. and will be held in RTFP 184, located at 1179 Union Circle. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and admission is free.
