DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Danny Hoey Jr., author and alumnus of the University of North Texas, will visit UNT April 2 (Thursday) to read from his first novel, "The Butterfly Lady" (2013). The reading will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Forum on the first floor of Willis Library. A Q&A will follow the reading.

"The Butterfly Lady" tells the story of Gabriel Smith, a black crossdresser living in Cleveland, Ohio. The book follows Gabriel as he interacts with the Cleveland community and experiences the difficulties of being black, gay and male. In his youth, Hoey witnessed how black men were treated in Cleveland and drew from that experience to create Gabriel's story.

Hoey is currently chair and associate professor of English at Indian River State College in Florida. He received his doctoral degree in English with an emphasis on creative writing from the University of North Texas.

His writing has appeared in "WarpLand," "Women in REDzine," "Mandala Journal," "Connotation Press," "African Voices Magazine," "SnReview," "The Writer's Bloc" and Hampton University's first-year writing textbook. He is the recipient of the ForeWord Firsts' Winter 2013 debut fiction award and the 2013 IndiFab Book of the Year bronze award for "The Butterfly Lady." He was also a 2011 semifinalist in the Gold Line Press Chapbook Competition for his work "Can these Bones Live?"

The event will be sponsored by the Creative Writing Program within the Department of English at UNT. For more information, contact Lisa Vining at 940-369-5981 or lisa.vining@unt.edu.
