DENTON (UNT), Texas -- The public can learn dance moves from world-renowned choreographer and teacher Bill Evans as he gives a community master class from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 13 (Tuesday) at the University of North Texas.

The class is part of his artist residency Sept. 9-18 at UNT's Department of Dance and Theatre.

Individuals from ages 12 to 80 can take the class, which will take place at the Dance and Theatre Building, 300 Bernard St. in Denton. The class is free, but interested people can reserve their space by mailing their name to the Department of Dance and Theatre, c/o Teresa Cooper, 1155 Union Circle #311070, Denton Texas 76203-5017.

Evans has performed all over the world and founded the Bill Evans Dance Company. He has created a dance technique based on Laban Bartenieff Movement Studies that has been examined by thousands of dancers.

"He helps students to be able to understand their body and technique," Teresa Cooper, senior lecturer of dance, said. "He helps them understand it's not just steps, but movement from a deeper place."

The community master class will be part of a series of classes Evans will teach as part of his residency. Evans will teach UNT dance students the choreography for his piece "For Nana," which he created in collaboration with composer Claudia Howard Queen, associate professor of music for dance.

The dance will be performed at the Faculty Dance Concert in February and the American College Dance Association regional conference in March.
