DENTON (UNT), Texas -- When Nike hired video blogger Casey Neistat to make a video about what it means to “Make It Count,” Neistat travelled around the world until he ran out of money. He and a friend produced a four-and-a-half minute video encapsulating their 10-day trek, and the video reached more than 1.5 million views within three days of its publication on YouTube. Neistat’s “Make It Count” story is just one of many examples of the short filmmaker’s bold, unique and creative storytelling style — a style that has earned the popular video artist nearly 5 million subscribers on YouTube and partnerships with some of the world’s most recognizable brands. At 7 p.m. on Oct. 26 (Wednesday), Neistat will discuss his life, work and videography with UNT students as part of the Mary Jo and V. Lane Rawlins Fine Arts Series’ 113th season.

“The Fine Arts Series is honored to welcome such an innovative mind and artist to campus,” said Nicole Newland, chair of the FAS committee. “It’s a rare opportunity for students and the community to see a filmmaker use new media to tell vivid and inspiring stories and offer honest social commentary.”

The event will take place in room 314 of the new UNT Union building, located at 1155 Union Circle. Neistat will join student Christopher Lee of the FAS committee for a moderated discussion about his career as a short filmmaker, video blogger, entrepreneur and YouTube personality.

Neistat was a dishwasher and bike messenger before becoming a self-taught filmmaker after discovering his love for the art and craft of moviemaking. Following his HBO series The Neistat Brothers and the indie film Daddy Longlegs, Neistat turned his attention to TV commercials. His work with companies like Google, J. Crew and Mercedes-Benz has re-defined branded content on the internet, and carved out a niche for himself as a well-respected filmmaker. In addition to his colossal YouTube fan base, Neistat’s honest narrative and captivating lifestyle is followed by millions of people on Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat. His work has set a new standard for the way brands interact with digital creators, and earned the honor of YouTuber of the Year at the 2016 Shorty Awards.

This discussion continues the Mary Jo & V. Lane Rawlins Fine Arts Series’ long-standing tradition of bringing artists and innovators to Denton. The event is free for all UNT students, $15 for UNT faculty, staff and alumni and $25 for the general public.
